This show, CNN Student News, is extremely informative. This is the first time I’ve seen it.

One of the things I learned was about a group called Generation Engage created by two young founders. Their purpose is to try to get more young people to vote. They hire young people to go out and spread the word about the issues and to get them interested in voting.

Also, it talked about Israel and how it was only sixty years old. They were celebrating in Tel Aviv.

The big story was about a cyclone that hit Myanmar. Over 10,000 people have died. There are organizations working to help the victims. The country wouldn’t let these organization into the country at first but now some are allowed to help.

I didn’t even know that president Bush had a daughter! Her name is Jenna and she is getting married in Crawford, Texas. Crawford uses Bush for publicity reasons. Whenever he comes into town, the shops sell Bush souveniers and make a large profit.

From watching the video CNN Student News, I feel well-informed about what is happening around the world.

That is terrible! I can not believe that ten thousand people were killed in that massive earthquake… mostly eighth and ninth graders! That must have been tragic for their parents. A three times higher death rate all because of an earthquake!

Two hundred and twenty thousand people dead in Indonesia! Fifty thousand dead in Iran! Earthquakes are dangerous!

I learned so much just by watching one video and reading on little passage. The video was about a rule in China where a family can only have one child and there was an earthquake that is now affecting that law because people are losing there only child. Another thing I learned was that a guy y fell out of a plane and instead of using a parachute; he used a pair of handmade wings with jets on them. He only flew for a few minutes and landed safely on the ground. I also learned that a lady that lost her mother when she was only twelve years old created a club called Young People Who Rock and there they hang out with other kids that lost a parents or close family member or friend. Morehouse College is a college that gives out more scholarships to black people than any other college and yet there is a man who attends there and went to a mostly black high school. The last thing I learned is that people discovered a preserved dead body in the bed of a house in Zagreb, Croatia. It had laid in a flat for 35 years! I learned a lot of information going to this website.

CNN Student News is a great place to learn what is happening around the world.

One of the many things that I learned about was about an earthquake in China. China has a one child policy so the country doesn’t get overpopulated. The earthquake buried nine hundred middle school kids in rubble and many parents lost their only child.

I also learned that the Supreme Court made California make gay marriage okay saying it was constitutional. Some people were joyful that the ban was overruled while some were outraged saying that marriage has always been between a man and a woman.

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr., David Satcher, and Spike Lee all went to Morehouse University? The university was an all-black university except for a few whites in the past couple of years.

There is someone who jumps out of planes with jets strapped to him and wings attached to him. He gets up to one hundred ninety miles per hour. He does this just for the thrill of it.

It is always a good feeling to be well-informed about what is happening around the world.

There were many things I learned from just watching the CC Student New on May 21, 2008.

First I leaned that the primary seaso nis almost over and that John McCain is holding up the Republican side, while Hillary Clinto and Obama are on the Domenican side. Also that Kennedy is fighting abrain tumor that might affect his life.

Second, I learned that a cyclone hit Myanmar and now rice farmers are struggling. Now they can’t plant new crops because the soil is ruined.

Last, I found out that the most expensive University is actaully George Washington and that the colleg prices have gone up 22 percent from the last five years. The price for going to college has become a problem for many families right now, as well as groceries and gas.

CNN Student News has some very interesting information about world views and the world today.

What I learned from watching this clip is how oil prices have been skyrocketing lately. Also how it affects how were depending more on fossil fuels and not looking hard enough for an alternative resources. With alternative resources like solar powered vehicles we can help slow down the fast rate of Global Warming. Even with these kinds of views and inputs the oil companies are not even making a single dent in ways to help improve our environment.

To me it’s amazing how some high school students can know and learn so much about micro economics and be able to compete. These terms and knowledge that these high school students know are probably even college class material. Also when in competition these students will press the buzzer before they even finish addressing the question, and these students are even getting these answers correct.

Also off the coast off a city in Japan there caught on tape was a fish that appears to be flying just above the water for over 45 seconds. Which is believed to be that longest ever fish flight seen.

Knowing this information I can already think of new ways of helping our planet improve in many ways.

The CNN student news has taught me a lot of events that are happening in our world today.

One item that they talked about was gas prices. They held a meeting with oil owners and they figured that gas prices shouldn’t skyrocket. They say that oil companies can’t change the world market like that. Also that the more companies that invest the more expensive it will be.

Another event that is happening in the world is everyone trying to go green. Companies, such as power companies, are trying to find better, cleaner ways to use their product. This will help stop global warming. Also BP Solar and Chevron are trying to fing alternative energy. Including renewable wind, solar, and energy.

Another item is high schools creating a new program to teach young adults about economics and polotics. The program is NCEE. It teaches teenagers about supply and demand and inflation.

    Mr. Imrie,
i wasnt sure i watched the right video, but i wrote about it anyway and i hope i did it right.

I watched a short clip, which talked about situations that happen throughout the world. The dilemmas in the video included, a deadly tornado, conflicts between countries, and better ways to get around.

Nature. An amazing thing, which is out of our control. Something we cannot stop, but happens each and every day. Nature’s “tantrums” happen more than enough. Some examples of these are, hurricanes, earthquakes, snowstorms, tsunamis, typhoons, monsoons, tornados, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides/mudslides, and many more. In the clip I watched, there was a deadly tornado that affected Colorado and many of the people who live there.

A tornado struck Colorado on Thursday May 22, 2008. It was unexpected and had major impact on the people in Colorado. There were many unfortunate outcomes. Approximately, one hundred and thirty children were rushed out of a childcare center and had only minor injuries, though a fatal situation had occurred. Over sixty thousand people lost power and many buildings perished. At first, there was only a slight sprinkle. Then suddenly, a downpour began, resulting in hail equivalent to the size of golf balls and fierce winds. The deadly tornado stretched a fourth of a mile long. Roofs were lifted off homes, and cars got flipped over. This treacherous tornado was unexpected, not only because it occurred in a mountain range, but also because the people of Colorado hadn’t experienced anything remotely close to what they experienced that day.

There are many conflicts going on all throughout the world. These conflicts can be between countries, can be caused by nature, or can be business related. In the clip I just watched, the conflict is between a secretary general, and a countries government.

An eighth secretary general named Ban Ki-moon traveled to a country called Myanmar. He went there because he wanted them to accept the aid he was offering. They denied his kind gesture and refused the “gift”. Ban Ki-moon was born in South Korea on June 13, 1944. U.S. president, John F. Kennedy, inspired him when he was a teenager. Ki-moon has a five-year term, which is renewable, and his start date was in January of 2007. Ki-moon was giving Myanmar this aid because a storm occurred and killed about one hundred thirty thousand people and left two million people homeless. There was also a high danger of disease exposure and chances of starvation. Ban Ki-moon was supposedly being generous and doing what was best for that country.

Another topic in the clip that was shown was the way people got around, other than cars. So, how do they get around? Usually by riding a bicycle to work or to run (“ride”) quick errands.

Instead of driving a car, there are other ways people can get around. Riding a bicycle is the most popular way. There are many benefits to riding a bike. Those benefits include, staying in shape, not cost, and the privilege of skipping traffic. This helps one stay fit because it takes strength and work to petal a bike all the way to work. The benefit of no cost is because, in order for a car to function, it needs gas. Gas, of course, costs money. Riding ones bicycle, though, does not cost any money. The advantage of bypassing traffic is because there is usually a bike lane on roads, which is sort of a shortcut or free pass. Don’t forget to wave to the drivers beside you as your passing by, because they’ll be stuck in traffic and you’ll be that much closer to your destination.

Thanks to the video, I learned a tremendous amount of interesting facts. I hope to learn more about situations in the world next week. CNN Student News is a great way to discover different things going on in the world.

By watching the CNN student news I learned a ton in just a few minutes. First, I heard about a devastating tornado in Colorado. Due to the ¼ mile whirlwind, lots of destruction occurred and buildings crumbled and many injuries occurred from various side effects of the tornado. I was also surprised to hear that it had golf ball-sized hail which I can not even imagine. THAT’S HUGE! Next, Myanmar is suffering the effects of a recent cyclone. There was massive destruction and many are in danger with diseases, dehydration, and more. I was amazed to hear that Myanmar is not excepting aid. I think that it is VERY necessary for them to get aid and they should except what help organizations have to offer. Luckily, people have met with the officials of the country and the Myanmar government may allow aid in soon. Third, with gas prices up to $4.00 a gallon, I was not surprised to hear that cars were the most expensive form of transportation, but also the quickest. With memorial day on Monday, it was also great and encouraging to hear that young people are contributing to our troops in Iraq. One student is giving CDs and DVDs to troops since they say that they miss entertainment a lot. I wish that I could contribute to this organization and I think that it is a great cause and will benefit our poor troops. Overall, I learned a lot form watching the student news.

I learned so much about the world just from watching this short CNN Student News Video (May 23, 2008).

First, I learned about the tragic incident which happened in Colorado. The tornado that hit was unexpected, and was a major impact on the city. It is amazing to see what people go to to keep people around them safe, and how tragic these incidents really are. Tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes and any natural disaster truly impact people and their lives. This just makes me want to help them even more. Just to rebuild their lives, their town, their everything will be a hard sturggle and any way anyone can help would be a truly amazing contribution.

I also learned about transportation and what each item of transportation costs to travel and how fast it is. First, there was one of the CNN News reporters in a car, which cost more but was the fastest. The subway which was fairly fast and not too much money, while the bicycle was slower but it didn’t cost the reporter a cent. It shows that there are many different ways of transportation but it all depends on what you want to spend and how fast you would like to get there.

There was also another disaster. In Myanmar a storm hit and killed many many people and left many homeless. Both of these disasters show how fortunate we are and how we should help in any way we possibly can. Millions of peoples live have been weakened MAJORLY or have been taken from them and although these natural disasters cannot be prevented this doesn’t mean that we should not try to help and try to rebuild the cities and lives of people.

I also learned about the project Tunes for the Troops. This was such a great project that supports the troops and lets them know that we appreciate what they are doing so greatly. I learned that troops really appreciate the tunes, and dvds and cds because it gives them a little taste of home and that they are doing so much that we are just sacrificing so little back.

This project just shows that if you want to help you can. Just starting within a school and starting a project can lead to a nationwide charity.

I learned so much from this video and want to learn more on how we can help and what we can do to help people, and the world.

The CNN Student News was very educational while being kid-friendly. I usually get bored when I try to watch the news on the television; however, this was something enjoyable while being factual. I felt smart by being able to talk about current events to my father. This video talked about many things such as the tornado in Colorado, Ban-Ki-moon, increasing gas prices, and a true hero who helps the troops fighting for us.

While watching the CNN Student News, I realized I was obviously oblivious to the world around me. I had no idea that Colorado just suffered a tornado, I only learned about it through the first part of the video. The length of the tornado might have been quite short, but the impact was intense nonetheless. It was comforting to know the children who attended a Windsor daycare center were safe. I was shocked that there were so many disasters in one place; first there was a tornado, then a severe hail storm. Both disasters had major impacts such as deaths, flipped trains, missing roofs and shattered buildings. How much damage can a city handle? Firemen and other brave people are trying to help regain control of the hurting Colorado city. It is so sad to see how mother nature can turn nasty sometimes, and the CNN Student News did a good job of showing that.

Not being conscious of the people in the American government, I had no clue who the “i.d. Me!” person of the second portion of the video was until I googled him. I was interested and glad that Ban-Ki-moon, the eighth Secretary General of the United States, was trying to help Myanmar with their recovery from Cyclone Nargus by trying to convince the government to accept the aid from others. It was fascinating that his inspiration for his field of work was John F. Kennedy. I hope this special 63 year old will be able to convince the government to accept the aid of other countries to help the hundreds and thousands of people who were affected by Cyclone Nargus. I also noticed that UNICEF, a charity I did a project on, was there to help, so were many other charities. I think we need more people like Ban-Ki-moon.

I enjoyed watching the race between the car, bicycle, and train, the third portion of the video, although I knew the outcomes in advance. It was not surprising that the car reached its destination first and the bicycle reached it last, or that the car’s trip cost more than the train’s or bicycle’s. The car’s trip cost $4.00+ and the train’s trip cost $2.90, while the bicycle trip cost nothing whatsoever. It is sad that something that goes so fast such as a car has a price of polluting our planet and emptying our wallets due to high gas prices. However, this video did a good job of showing the alternatives to driving since the bicyclist and train were only a couple minutes behind.

Watching Kaylee, a hero in the fourth portion of the video, I suddenly felt a wave of inspiration and idolism. It was amazing to see that even children can make a difference in the lives of the troops fighting for our nation. Kaylee is a major part of the CD and DVD drives we are familiar with today. The troops fighting do so much for us; it only makes sense for us to give a little back. Risking one’s life is nothing compared to spending a few dollars on DVDs or CDs. Kaylee was so committed to helping the troops that she missed her own junior prom, which from what I heard is supposed to be a huge event. It is nice that she took what the troops wanted into consideration. According to some military personals, the first thing the troops missed was their family and the second was entertainment. I don’t blame them; entertainment, I believe is man’s best friend. After watching that, I instinctively felt the need to hunt for CDs and DVDs. Kaylee and the CNN Student News did a good job of persuading others to donate CDs and DVDs through this video.

Through the CNN Student News, I was able to understand more about the world. I now feel smarter and can have an intellectual conversation with my dad. I am definitely looking forward to watching next weeks video.

  12. 12 Conner S. May 25, 2008 at 6:32 pm

NOTE: The observations made in this posting are from the CNN Student News clip of May 24, 2008. The notes shown here may not match the current video.

Recently, a massive tornado that spanned nearly a quarter of a mile in width raided the northern border of Colorado. The storm that created the tornado fell apart quickly after the tornado had been created, which, however short it may seem, still left enough time for the storm to do major damage. One man stated that at first there was a small amount of rain, which soon turned into golf ball-sized bits of hail very quickly. In the path of the storm was a city called Windsor, which is eighty miles north of Denver. It was reported that at least one person in Windsor was killed by the storm, leaving another sixty thousand without power. Buildings in the city were reduced to giant piles of ruble. Despite all the chaos, there were still 130 children saved in a Windsor daycare center. This storm just, once again, demonstrated how unpredictable the weather can be sometimes. It also showed that even chaotic times can have peaceful times.
Next, a secretary general by the name of Ban Ki-Moon travelled to Myanmar to ask the Myanmar government officials to accept his plea to let the foreign community into Myanmar to help clean up after the recent Cyclone Nargus. This cyclone devastated Myanmar by killing nearly 130,000 people and left another 2,000,000 without homes. Ki-Moon met with the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister to discuss the matter. After meeting with them, he stepped out to see the destruction himself. There have been high hopes of the government finally hearing an accepting this plea that has been continuing for the past several weeks now. However, there is still a dangerous fear of dehydration and starvation with the limited amounts of food and clean water available for use. This, like the preceding paragraph, shows how devastating nature can be at full force. It also shows what one man is willing to do to find help for his people.
As many (if not all people) have noticed, gas prices have been traveling upwards quickly recently. To counteract this, many people are searching for alternative ways of transportation to save their precious money. CNN has decided to test three different ways of transportation today which are the bicycle, train, and car. After driving from an agreed location to the CNN Studios, the car was the first to arrive, the train second, and the bike last. However, the biker spent no money at all, the train passenger spent $2.90 for train fares, and the car spent approximately $4 for one gallon of gasoline to fuel the car. My personal preference would have to be biking because I would pay no money at all, and I could simply zip right through traffic when it is clogged up at Rush Hour.
Finally, a young student named Kaylee Radzyminski is showing her Memorial Day spirit to the American soldiers in Iraq by entertaining them. She started a drive at her school to collect CDs and DVDs to entertain the soldiers, which has since grown to a national drive. It is both interesting and rewarding to see someone who cares about are country and cares to show it like Kaylee Radzyminski does with this drive.

This blog matches the CNN Student News that occured yesterday.

I have really learned some new and interesting facts about what is going on around the world.

The tornado in Colorado was massive and did a lot of damage. It tore the tops of roofs off, destroyed many buildings and many other parts of Colorado. A children’s center by the tornado was not effected however. The children inside were evacuated. Many people lost their power. The tornado in Colorado was big and very effective.

Ban Ki-moon is helping a country called Myanmar. He is doing this by aiding them. Myanmar is really in the need for aid and assistiance. People are starving and in definate need for help. Ban Ki-moon is giving them what they need so the people there will survive.

A teen in the United States is considered a hero to the military. She is sending CDs and DVDs to the United States’ troups in Iraq. the top two things that are the most missed are: family and entertainment. She has gotten her school, community, and many others involved and contributing to this organization. She is truely a hero to the military.

By watchng the CNN Student News I have learned more on what is happening around the world. CNN Student News was really an eye-opener for me.

This is in response to the CNN Student News that happened today.

I learned of the Phoniex which is the spacecraft that NASA sent to the moon. I Thought it was incredible how a spacecraft could be traveling that long without any damage, I also found it remarkable how it slowed down from over 12 thousand miles per hour, to zer o in a short amount of time.

I found it awesome that President Bush and future canidates gave speeches honoring our vetrans. It shows true love and dedication for out country.

It seems as if natural disasters are happening all over the world latley. Nine people dead and millions of dollars done. How terrible

It was extremely scarry to find an earthquake happening during the wedding. I am glad everybody was safe, but feel bad for the bride and groom as there wedding was destroyed by a natural disaster.

Overall, this newsprogram was very informative and a good way to find out what is going on in the world today.

This video was very informitive, while still being kid-friendly. I actually learned some new things about the world and what is going on. Now I can talk about the news with my parents and actually know what I am talking about.

First, I found out the Phoenix has landed on Mars. I didn’t even know there was one before I saw this video. It landed safe and when it landed it started taking many pictures. The last time they tried something like this it was a total disaster.

Second, I learned that George Bush held a ceremonyon Memorial Day for the women and men who sacrificed and served for our country. Also John McCain, Barack Obama, and Kennedy spoke publicly about Memorial Day. However, Clinton didn’t not and instead she wrote about it on her website.

Last, I found out that there have been many storms and earthquakes. Half of Iowa was destroyed and a huge earthquake hit China. The earthquake killed more than 65,000 people and destroyed many buildings, churches, and homes. Tents and medical supplies have been sent to help victims.

In conclution, some may think the news is boring, but it can be very intersting. I learned a lot about what is happening to our world today. For me this is an easy extra credit opportunity.

    Extra Credit- May 27 2008
Blog is written about 5/26-27 video. This blog may not correspond to the current video.

The CNN Student News had a copious amount of information about today’s world, including a story about the Phoenix, which landed on Mars earlier this week, some information about Memorial Day, and how political leaders acknowledge the occasion, and a segment about some of the disasters occurring around the world, including an earthquake in China and the cyclone that hit Myanmar.

The Phoenix, a NASA craft landed on Mars on May 25,2008. This event has been hoped for by scientists over the years, although NASA was not able to get a spacecraft to land on Mars 1999. The Phoenix traveled 422 million miles to reach the red planet , where it is currently fulfilling its mission to analzye the soil for signs of life. The craft was not expected to land safely, but it did,to the happiness of NASA’s control team.

“On this Memorial Day, I stand before you as the Commander-in-Chief and try to tell you how proud I am at the sacrifice and service of the men and women who wear our uniform.” These words were part of President George Bush Jr.’s speech at the Arlington National Cemetery on May 26, 2008. He and many other political figures like John McCain and Barack Obama gave inspiring speeches to the public this Monday. Hilary Clinton did not give a speech, but she did post a comment upon her website about the occasion.

In Midwest USA,on May 25, the citizens of Minnesota, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Kansas suffered a destructive earthquake that killed at least nine, and injured many more. Luckily for residents, the earthquake could have been much worse, if not for early warning signs.

There has been trouble in Asia too, both in Myanmar and in China. Myanmar is still attempting to recover from a cyclone that happened earlier this month. The government recently let aid workers from all over the world come to help the struggling country, although they have not been letting relief crews enter. In China, a recent earthquake left many homes and families in shambles. Currently, there are at least 65,000 dead, and many more injured. A wedding photographer,Wang Qiang, took many photos when the quake interrupted a photo shoot he was participating in. His photos show they destruction that took place when the quake hit.

Watching the CNN Student News program was very informative. It showed me many of the current events happening around the world.

  19. 19 Eric Y. May 27, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I’m really excited that another probe is on Mars. It’s always interesting to me to see what they can find, whether it’s an oddly shaped canal or frozen water. Even if they don’t find anything interesting, it will just reinforce other theories about other planets so there is no money wasted. Unless the probe crashes, that is always a problem.
It amazes me the Myanmar is so reluctant on letting in people to help after the cyclone. They can not take care of everything by themselves! AT least they finally let people in and not just goods.
How one earthquake can cause so much devastation is a wonder to me. I can understand that their buildings might not be safe for earthquakes and that they might topple and crush people. Or that people can suffocate under the rubble. But the amount of aftershocks also! The floods that are expected to come as well. I wonder if some people think that it’s the end of the world…

  20. 20 Olivia Q. May 27, 2008 at 8:07 pm

From CNN Student News, I learned interesting facts concerning what is happening around the world.

First, in China near the region from where the devastating earthquake occurred, landslides have caused a river to become blocked. With the water rising at six feet a day, officials have become worried of major flooding, having people evacuate. Over 158,000 people have evacuated living in tents on higher lands; many people have also been affected by aftershocks of the earthquake. Though there are soldiers working to help prevent major flooding, it is not considered safe.

Next, from old Chinese beliefs, the number 8 is supposedly a lucky number that is linked to prosperity, but after three important events in China people are starting to question how lucky the number 8 is. One event is a when a massive snowstorm covers China with snow on January 25, and when you add 1+2+5 it equals 8. Another event was when a wide spread protest arises in Tibet on March 14, 3+1+4 equals 8. The last event was the horrible earthquake that shook China on May 12, 5+1+2 equals 8. Although this interesting chain of events relate to the number 8, many say it is only a coincidence and only a superstition.

Last, a U.S army chorus is singing national anthems in numerous languages around the world. From the start of the U.S army chorus 50 years ago, the chorus has performed for many significant people such as the president.

From watching CNN Student News, I have learned many new facts about what is going on in the world.

  21. 21 Carter M. May 28, 2008 at 3:36 pm

I honestly can not believe that the earth quake in china killed that many people. I believe that the dam in the quake lake will give away, but it was a good idea to use the buldosers to try and clear the slip way. I really don’t believe that the number 8 is relly a luucky number. I think its just a silly superstition like walking under a ladder. Because according to the video some unlucky events happened on a day that had to do with 8. I thought it was quit funny that the men of the military were singing songs in pakistan, and the fact that they were singing in more than thirty languages. But on the other hand that would be pretty cool to sing for the president, and a lot of other important people. what was really cool is that I got the Shoutout question right when they asked it. I think it was pretty cool of that kid to become an official eagle scott at only 13 for his grandfather, and the fact that the whole family generation was an eagle scott.

The first story on the CNN Student News was about the dangerous after affects of the earthquake in Sichuan, China. The main after affect was the water issues that are called “Quake Lakes.” These occurred by the earthquake causing dams to break and water to spew out and flood. This formed lakes because natural walls of rock and dirt stopped the water flow, but these walls could topple any minute. It is also amazing that all of the recent disasters have been on dates linking to China’s lucky number, 8. This must be a coincidence, but it is still an amazing one.

The rest of the news on the other hand, is not very significant to the world. Although it is not significant, the army is still doing a great thing by learning other languages to sing for other countries. This also improves the United State’s friendship with other countries. The other news story was just an interesting fact, and nothing more. It is awesome that a family has four straight generations of over achieving Eagle scouts at the same time. The CNN student new has great stories and information to keep kids informed.

Wow. This show showed me a lot of things I have never really cared to think about seeing as I am only thirteen. And it had all the information in only ten minutes!

This segment told me about how the three remaining presidential candidates are actually agree on ending the conflict in Darfur that started five years ago. “We stand united and demand that genocide and violence in Darfur be brought to an end.” That is a quote from a newspaper article that the show mentioned. It also said that the signatures of the three were also together on the same page. It is truly amazing to see three people that are competing so devoutly against each other come to this kind of agreement.

Not only did this show cover politics and worldwide news, it covered what people in our own country are doing. It discussed how some people today still have old cars that they drive on certain events that occur once a week. The Rockin’ Rodders as they are called have a weekly car rally with cars from twenty to thirty years ago. While on this subject, they also addressed the problem with gas prices. Apparently, yesterday’s low for the entire country was in Missouri for about $3.76! Though not a bargain in any way, it is about nineteen cents cheaper than the national average. Of course that makes a difference!

The final topic they covered is one that made me concerned. Some scientists, such as Dr. Keith Black, are saying that there maybe a link between cell phones and brain cancer. They believe that the non-ionizing radiation that cell phones give off can be a cause for a tumor called acoustic neuroma. Though the amount that comes from a cell phone has gone down since the first ones in 1983, they still continue to produce the radiation. Certain experts also say that the best bet to prevent the occurrence of these tumors from a cell phone is to use an ear piece and carry in a holster rather than in a pocket.

So there is genocide going on in Dafur. I think it’s terrible that genocide even occurs; I never understood the concept of going around and killing large amounts of people, and when I say large amounts of people, I mean close to 300,000 people. There is a bright side to this (relatively dark) situation: people actually recognize this as a genocide, making it seem as big a deal it really is, unlike the Armenian genocide, which people still debate over. It’s also nice to see the three presedential candidates get together and discuss this instead of focusing only on the elections. Also about the genocide in Darfur, my cousin is in a band that raises money to help the people affected by the violence, and they’ve raised three-thousand dollars over the last year or so.

Three dollars and seventy-five cents is the lowest for gas prices in the country! Makes me (almost) glad I don’t drive. I guess people driving less will slow down the steady smog that’s polluting our air, although I don’t think there’s really anything we can do to help totally clear pollution at this point, unless we sucked all the gas out of the air and spit it back out all nice and clean.

I think it’s awesome that those guys kept their cars from when they were in high school. If it isn’t broken, then don’t fix it (or get a new one, for that matter). I just can’t imagine actually trying to keep a car that’s that old in good condition.

Now, when they say that excessive cell phone use leads to brain cancer, I almost think it’s like that scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, how Sarah is in that movie about how the guy picks up his cell phone and dies. Is Sanjay Gupta trying to tell us that radiation from a cell phone will give us brain tumors, or is he saying that we’re getting addicted to technology and the comfort of our appliances? I guess both are plausible, but I think I’ll keep in mind to hold my cell phone in my backpack or somewhere else…I don’t want a tumor.

Huh…that was actually a rather entertaining ten minutes. Sad to learn about the genocide in Darfur, but it’s cool to see guys talk about how their cars are their life and how it’s such a big part of them.

In the news report from CNN Student News for May 28, 2008, I learned many interesting facts.

First of all, I learned about the harsh devastation which is happening in China. I found out that the earthquakes in China created a land slide which dammed up a river making a lake. This lake is now building up and is now more than 725 meters deep and some fear that it may overflow, so they are camping on higher ground to be kept safe during this time of need. The numbers associated with this earthquake are: 67,000 deaths and 21,000 missing.

A lucky number for the Chinese is slightly smaller however; 8. Some Chinese now think that 8 is a curse, however, due to three main reasons. The first is that a harsh snowstorm covered China on 1/25, and 1+2+5=8. The second reason is that there was a large protest against Chinese rule. Date: 3/14, and 3+1+4=8. Lastly, the devastating earthquake that hit China on 5/12, and 5+1+2=8. Although some may be superstitious, others believe that this is all just a coincidence.

Another story includes the overview of the U.S. Army Chorus, where many people not only learn new songs, but new languages for those songs. These different-languages songs are sung whenever high-level international delegations take place. These songs are sung to show America’s respect towards other countries.

I am glad that I watched this video because now I feel that I know a little bit more about the world.

    May 29, 2008

On today’s episode of CNN student news they talked about an issue that Hilary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain are all agreeing on, how much gas prices have gone up and how cell phones can cause cancer.

The issue that all three presidential candidates are agreeing on is the devastation going on in Darfur, Sudan. In Darfur civilians have had to leave their homes and many are being killed or dieing from a poor environment. In March, it was estimated that around 200,000 people were killed but it is now estimated that 300,000 have been killed by today. The agreement was first posted in an issue The New York Times and it states,”We stand united and demand that the genocide and violence in Darfur be brought to an end”. The article was signed by all three supporters.

Another huge problem that has been hurting almost all Americans lately is the ongoing gas price increase. The lowest price for regular gas on Wednesday(5/28) was in Missouri. The estimated price was $3.76. This price is 19 cents lower than the average price in our country. The outrageous prices have been increasing for 22 days in row. 11 states are paying $4+ for a gallon of gas.

The last discussion was on whether talking on cell phones can cause cancer. The first cell phone was released in 1983 and weighed 2 pounds but cost approximately $4000. Cell phones today cost less and weigh less but they are still liable to cause brain cancer. The type of cancer that has been found in most cases is acoustic neuroma. This type is found in the middle of the ear. Doctors have also said that using cell phones can cause a person’s memory to decrease and their concentration to become insufficient. Cell phones give off nonironine (sp?) radiations and from 850-1900 mega hurts. Scientists and doctors say that to prevent having the risk of getting cancer you can wear ear phones and instead of putting your phone in your pocket put it in a case and clip it to your belt.

All in all, I learned a great amount of information by watching CNN student news.

  27. 27 Steven G. May 29, 2008 at 5:28 pm

The news today was about the tragic ocnflicts in Darfur. It is amazing that the death toll is almost three thouand people! It is also suprising that all of the presidential candidates are actually agreeing on something. Previously, the candidates were virtually fighting for a presidential nomination. This is the first time I have ever seen rival competitors agree. Although it is unusual, they are doing it for a great cause, to end the wars that are killing hundreds of thousands in Darfur.

What is really hard to believe about today’s news was the gas prices. They have went up twenty-two consecutive days! And now the lowest gas prices in America is $3.76. There are also eleven states with gas over four dollars a gallon, including california. The gas station closest to me is $4.21!

The story about cell phone risks is really quite scary. I don’t think anyone in this day in age can imagine life without instant and portable communication. The results could even be disastrous. The problem is that cell phones give off some non-ionized radiation, which doctors say might cause a tumor in your ear in the long run. Although it would indeed be best for health benefits, I don;t think many people are willing to give up their cell phones forever. This just shows how instead of us controlling technology, technology is controlling us.

Hi Mr. Imrie! I watched a video on May 29, 2008 about the massacre in Danfur, Iraq, gas prices, classic cars, and cell phones that may cause brain cancer.

These are the things I’ve learned from CNN student news:

I have learned so many things from watching this clip. It is very devastating because of all the people in Danfur, Iraq, being massacred. I can’t believe Hilary, Obama, and McCain joined hands to help the people in Danfur. It was estimated that around 200000 people had died last year. This year, it was estimated that 300,000 people had died.

I have learned that gas prices are EXTREMELY high these days. The lowest gas price from yesterday was in Missouri. It was about $3.76 and was the cheapest in the whole country. Many people stopped driving because of the high gas prices.

I have also learned that many men loves to keep their “classic” rides back in the day and not buy new ones. They keep them because it brings back memories. Cars have been around for many years and have also been in a lot of movies. Cars have been the center of the american dream.

The next clip I watched was about cell phones. Cell phones first premiered in 1983 and have been used ever since. Doctors are now raising concerns for the possible impacts on our brains. They believe that cell phone use leads to cancer. Most of the scientific community disagrees but one doctor fights the document. His name is Dr. Sanjay Gupta believes it leads to brain cancer. Some doctors and surgeons in the world agrees with Dr. Sanjay Gupta. One doctor said that cell phones can increase the risk of brain cancer. They also say that cell phones lead to memory problem and concentration problems. One tumor they are very worried about is the accoustic neuroma. They are afraid that the tumor might be at risk because of the cell phones. But cell phone have non-inonizing radiation [sorry if I spelled that wrong].This makes brain cancer at a higher risk.

I have learned so many things with the clips I watched from CNN student news. I have never even thought of cell phones being a dangerous device that may cause brain cancer. I also didn’t know that many people in Danfur is suffering severly because the massacre. With the gas prices clip, I was so suprised about it because my parents go on and on about the prices being too high. I have learned many important subjects around the world from the CNN student news.

P.S. I wasn’t sure if I did this write, but oh well.

The stories on the CNN students news was very interesting. This was the first time I had done that and it was very interesting. The story about the toilet on the space station was funny. The amazing cheese races seem weird but there is, or was, probably some tradition to why they do that. Also that baseball game board seems really cool, it seems weird that there is only ten of them left in the world. Those space robots going to Mars are cool, but it seems odd that it takes 2 days for the arm to get ready. Oh well. This was a very interesting report and i cant wait to do it again.

  30. 30 Sara I May 29, 2008 at 8:32 pm

The first video I have watched was about John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama. These candidates are standing together to end a conflict going on in the Darfur region in Sudan. They are considering it the worst humanitarian crisis in the world! Violence in this region has killed hundreds of thousands of people and forced millions out of their homes and on to the streets of Sudan. One quote that has been stated by all three candidates it is, “We stand united and demand the end of the genocide and violence in Darfur be brought to and end”. What was very surprising was that Clinton, McCain, and Obama all signed the bottom of this form. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have been massacred. Our three candidates are calling the killings unacceptable and intend on doing something about it.

I think it is very unacceptable that this genocide has been looked over and is finally getting taken care of. It should have been stopped before thousands of innocent people were killed and millions were forced out of their homes. No food, no water, and no shelter and violence and killings are going on. Children are being put out on the streets! Can you imagine being forced out of your own home? It’s horrible, but I am glad that out candidates plan on doing something about it before it gets even worse than it all ready is.

Watching the CNN Student News taught me a lot very quickly. First, I heard and entertaining story about NASA having toilet problems in their space station. It has trouble handling liquids but can dispose of solid waste which is odd (I would think it would be the other way around). They are sacrificing space for other supplies to bring a new toilet up into space on their next mission. Speaking of NASA, there was another story about space agencies and them trying to get to Mars. They have been trying to get to Mars for about 28 years and they have had major setbacks but also several awesome successes. For example, they landed on Mars in 1967 and had their first Phoenix landing this year. A new robotic arm extension helped them with this year’s success, but about 55% of their missions have failed. In Nepal, I was glad to hear that they have become a republic which is always a great milestone for a country. More good news came in the next very informing story about child and teen obesity and overweight. The number of young people overweight is leveling out. The last story was about a very old baseball game. It was found and it is labeled to be from 1893 and is still in very good condition and is now a hot commodity.

The show CNN Student News is extremely informative and inspirational. It is inspirational by all of the great things that teenagers are doing for the world, or in this week’s case, American soldiers. Also for all of the organizations that are helping disasters like Myanmar’s.

One thing that I learned about what is happening around the world is a tornado and major storm that hit Windsor, Denver. The storm was over a quarter of a mile wide. The tornado destroyed many buildings and killed at least one person. From the storm, there was hail the size of golf balls.

Another thing that I learned from watching CNN Student News was about Ban Ki-moon. He is the head of the UN and went to Myanmar to try to convince their leader to let help in from the devastating storm that killed over 130,000 people and left 2,000,000 people homeless. The main dangers that the survivors face now is disease, starvation, exposure, and dehydration.

I also learned about Kaylee Marie Radzyminski, a teen who has started an organization that is now nationwide to give CDs and DVDs to American soldiers overseas. The project first started out at her school, then to her community, and then to the entire nation. There have been over 200,000 CDs and DVDs that have been donated to the soldiers.

As everyone (or many) people have noticed, gas prices have skyrocketed tremendously. The people of the CNN Student News crew did a test that included a bike, a car, and the metro. They discovered that, even in the heavy commute, the car gets to the destination first. Second was the metro who got about eight minutes behind. Last was the bike. The car took $4 to get to the destination however, while the metro took $2.90, also the biker paid absolutely nothing.

How far is Bethesda, Maryland to Washington D.C.? Well from google maps it is approximately 8.2 miles to the center.

This show has been very inspirational that made me want to donate CDs and DVDs to the soldiers and has been extremely informative on what is happening around the globe.

This is the blog i sent through e-mail.

There are many issues and policies being fixed and changed in the world.

Wow!!! That is so amazing that the Space Shuttle Discovery had a toilet problem. Poor astronauts had to manually flush which took ten minutes to do. What a pain that must have been normally it takes two to three minutes to use the restroom and now ten minutes and two people.

Amazing, the spacecraft had an arm malfunction. It sounds odd that they think that there might be the basic forms of life if there is ice under the surface. This does sound really intriguing though. If they find that life could live on and had lived on mars that would be amazing. But hopefully the mission of digging will go well.

Holy Smokes!!! 239 years of on monarchy and then they just ban them. This sounds like it caused a good amount of turmoil among the people. They even had too use tear gas to disperse a crowd too close to the temple. Even bombings happened but it sounds like they were directed at politicians and government officials. But wouldn’t it be a bummer if you were voted off after your family ruling for 239 years.

Obesity is such an issue among the children of America. The tests show that there has been a rise in children obesity but there might still be hope for children to be physically fit and active not sitting at a video game gaining weight. Fortunately, schools are providing better meals and offering more fruits and vegetables.

As can see, there are many issues throughout the world. Yet many good things happening to help fix and improve.

    Extra Credit II- May 30,2007
Blog is written about 5/30 video. This blog may not correspond to the current video.

There were many entertaining stories on tonight’s CNN student news, but I felt that there were four main topics.

One of the stories was about a broken toilet in the space station. The commode is currently in disrepair, and is a large nuisance to the members of the space crew, although it is not a large emergency. Luckily, the astronauts will be able to use the bathroom in the escape pod. The space shuttle(Discovery) will be delivering a new toilet to the space station shortly. Also in space, the Phoenix is getting ready to send out its probes into Mar’s soil. The main mission of the Phoenix is to analyze Mar’s soil for signs of life. Whether they have found anything or not is still unknown to the public.

Another important world event is that Nepal is finally ending royal rule. The small,Asian country of Nepal has been under royal control for over 200 years. The editor of one of Nepal’s largest papers, The Kathmandu Post, calls this “The biggest achievement of the people in the history of the country.”

The third main topic was on a 115-year old board game that was found recently. The board game, Zimmer’s baseball game” shows the roots of modern day baseball. The finding is very rare, because there are only ten surviving editions of the game in the world, and that it is in mint condition. It was bought in 1893, at the Chicago World Fair.

The fourth and last topic was on obesity. Studies have shown that 32% of all children are overweight, and that 16% are obese. Only 11% of children between the ages of 2 and 19 are extremely overweight. Luckily for future generations, this “fat” trend seems to be changing. The most recent studies show that slowly, the trend is leveling off due to better eating and exercising habits.

The CNN news was very informative. I learned many facts about recent world issues from watching it.

  35. 35 Ryan H. May 30, 2008 at 10:00 pm

The show CNN Student News has, again, not failed to be informative. I was a little disappointed that they did not show a teen power seciton. Those are always very inspirational and informative. These stories today have still been great though.

Did you know that there is only one bathroom on a space station? Do you know what would happen if that one toilet broke down? Well the astronauts would have to use the bathroom in the escape pod or would have to come back down to Earth to have it fixed.

The rover that is on Mars at the moment has two day of preparation before it digs into the soil to recover samples. NASA’s motto is to try, try again which is exactly what they did for the 55% of failure for NASA’s experiments.

For the first time in Nepal’s history, they dropped monarchy and are now a republic country. Some have said this is their biggest achievement ever.

Teen obesity has started to level off which is terrific. We still need to work on lowering it now though. A study showed that children in the ages of 2-19, 32% are overweight, 16% obese, and 11% extremely obese.

Do you know when the first professional baseball game was played? Well the first game in baseball history was in 1871.

There is a baseball board game that has been uncovered that is 115 years old and in mint condition. It has been said that there are only ten in the world.

In Gloucestershire, England, there is a cheese roll contest where a cheese roll is rolled down a steep hill and people run down the hill with it and, most of the time, fall and end up in a lot of tremendous pain.

Robby Knievel set the world record for the longest jump on a motorcycle. He jumped 220 feet over buses and fire. It was a spectacular sight to see.

CNN Student News is probably the most informative show for teenagers in the world. Although it did not have the teen power section, it was still great and I learned a lot about what is happening around the world.

  36. 36 Nicole K May 31, 2008 at 8:47 am

From the CNN Student News, I learned many intresting things about what is happening in our world today.

The first thing I learned from this video is that in one of the space shuttles, their only one toilet broke. This is apperently not the biggest problem they have had to deal with, but is very annoying to them. They have decided to fix this problem by having another space shuttle bring them something to fix their toilet.

The next thing I learned was that the Mars Phoenix Lander has just landed on Mars. It was built with a robotic arm which is going to dig into the soil of the planet. Also that 55% of NASA’s missions to Mars had ended in failure. They hadn’t even reached Mars untill the 1960’s, when in 1976 Viking 1 and 2 had landed. In 1997 the Mars Pathfinder began sending pictures back to Earth. Later, two other space shuttles, the Climate Orbiter and the Polar Lander, both failed. Finally in 2004 two Rovers reached Mars, took pictures, soil samples, and studied rocks. Now, the Phoenix is on its mission.

The last thing I learned was that a very old board game, the Base Ball Game was found. The game was made in 1893 and thought to be one of ten in the whole world. It is in very good shape and has pictures of baseball players who are now in the Hall of Fame. It is also the most looked for baseball game in the world and is very important to baseball’s history.

The CNN Student News was very intersting and has some great information about the world today.

  37. 37 Emily L. May 31, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I was able to learn a lot by watching CNN student news. First, I learned of NASA toilet troubles and how instead of bringing more equipment to space, they are bringing a new toilet pump. Second, I learned about the Mars Rover Phoenix, which is beginning to use its robotic arm. Its estimated life span is 90 days, but after Spirit and Opportunity long outlasted their predicted life span I would not be surprised if it lasted longer. Third, I learned about an old baseball board game that is one of only ten that exists. It was made about the time that baseball started and is being displayed in the estate where it was found. Overall CNN student news taught me about events that are taking place right now.

  38. 38 Michelle S. May 31, 2008 at 9:02 pm

The story I watched was a story that happened yesterday.

The first story was about a problem happening on a space shuttle. The toilets on the space shuttles are having some plumbing difficulties. This was a setback in NASA’s Mission to Mars. Some other setbacks include in 1999 Climate Orbiter failed. Also in 1999, the Polar Lander failed. These were both lost on rival. However, there is an opportunity for success, in 2004 the Rovers Spirit and Opportunity happened. This was definitely a success. And as of right now, Phoenix is on its way.

The second story I heard about was approximately in South Asia, between India and China. It is one of the eight highest mountains including Mount Everest. The capital of this place is Katmandu. This is Nepal. Something big happened in Nepal. They dropped their Monarchy. The republic says that this is the biggest achievement ever.

The third story I heard about was about teens being overweight. One did a poll on 22 teens and these are the results; 32% of teens are overweight, 16% of teens are obese, and 11% of teens are extremely obese. A conclusion one came up with is that these teens need to do more active activities. This includes having better eating habits and that these teens need to exercise a lot more.

The forth story I heard about was the first all-professional baseball game played. It was played in 1871. Tying into this statement in the Bingham-Waggoner Estate, a man found a 115 year old Hall of Fame Baseball Game. This game was established in 1893. This man found this in a closet door in a house. This game is in remarkable shape. It is an amazing baseball game and if one wants to see this they will have to come to that house to see it.

The fifth story I heard about was about a kitty who is crazy for cruising in the car with its’ owner. He believes that he doesn’t get enough time to spend with his kitty so he takes his kitty with him driving around in his car. Another man kind of agrees with this. This man trained his dog to have a cat on its back and have a rat with the cat. He says that he wanted to see if it would work, and it did. The cat cleans the rat instead of eating it. This is an amazing thing that happened.

The final story is about a man who jumps over 24 delivery trucks. This man jumped a total of 220 feet. This man made one incredible leap! Once he did this he landed himself into the World Geniuses Books. In conclusion, this report had many inspiring topics that is showed.

I learned a lot from watching the CNN Student News. First off, I learned that space shuttles are going to start carrying a toilet pump instead of more space equipment because of the current problem in space where some astronauts’ toilet is broken. I also learned that the arms of a Mars lander after they were at first tucked in for safety. Third, I learned that Nepal is getting rid of its monarchy government and is turning into a republican government. Lastly, I learned that child besity is starting to decline after a 25 year increase.

  40. 40 Jenna S. June 1, 2008 at 9:08 am

Watching the CNN student news was very informing. I learned many interesting facts about what is happening around the world today. One thing that I learned was about the International Space Station. Their only toilet on the space craft is broken. It is able to dispose of solids but is having problems with liquids. Another space craft called the Shuttle Discovery was instructed to leave some unneeded cargo behind to make room for a spare toilet that was to be launched with the space craft and transferred to the International Space Station. If something goes wrong with all other solutions then the last solution is that the astronauts will be instructed to use the toilet on their escape pod. This CNN student news video was very interesting and informing.

  41. 41 Kristyn L. June 1, 2008 at 9:11 am

CNN Student News has taught me many things while watching the video.

Unfortunately for the astronauts, there is a broken toilet on their space station. For some reason, the toilet can handle solids, but not liquids. The astronauts are trying to fix their toilet, but in case they do not fix the toilet, they have their escape pod. The new parts for the toilet are going to be hand carried from Russia, so they can make sure that their toilet will be fixed before the next space launch.

Mars Phoenix Lander has landed on Mars and is ready to get some soil from the red planet. The arm to collect soil has four joints at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. It takes two days for the arm to start collecting some of the soil on Mars. Supposedly, 55% of missions of Mars had ended in failure. NASA has been doing missions to Mars since the 1960s and nothing landed there until 1976, when Viking 1 and 2 landed on the planet. The pathfinder landed on the red planet in 1997 and sent pictures to NASA Headquarters for four months. Also in 2004, Rovers Spirit and Opportunity landed on Mars and got a few pictures, and also studied rocks and collected soil samples. Even though there were some missions that succeeded, there were a few that failed. For example, in 1999 both the Climate Orbiter and the Polar Lander failed because of getting lost.

Nepal gained its independence 240 years ago. Ever since then, it had been ruled by a monarchy. During this week, they voted to end monarchy in Nepal and turned the government to republic. As a deal, Nepal’s king has two weeks to leave the palace.

Child obesity study shows that 32% of kids are overweight, 16% are obese, and 11% are extremely obese. Hopefully kids will get better eating habits, and exercise daily to get healthy. But many are thinking that it is too soon to say if the trend is going to change.

There is a board game that has baseball players from 115 years ago. In fact, baseball started in 1871. The game was made in 1893. On the game board, it shows faces of famous baseball players. Supposedly, there are only ten copies of the game board. If people want to see the board game, people would have to go to the estate, which was where the game board was found.

From this lesson, I learned about how NASA had plumbing problems, how Nepal gained its independence and how they voted out monarchy, the percentage rate of obese and overweight children, and a board game that was created in 1893.

Watching the CNN student news video, I learned about a very tragic event that occurred just this month in China. A huge earthquake struck destroying hundreds of homes and killing millions of people. At that same moment, many couples were taking their wedding pictures in a church. The earthquake struck leaving everyone panicked. A photographer, Wang Qiang, immediately began taking pictures of the earthquake in action. Everyone managed to make it out of the church alive and before the aftershock. They made walked to a nearby village where they found all of their homes destroyed and people everywhere panicked. Although Wang Qiang’s house was destroyed, he shared the little that he had. This tragic story of these couples during the earthquake is an example of the immensity and harshness of nature.

As I watched CNN student news, I was able to learn a lot about current events in the world. I heard about toilet problems on the International Space Station and how astronauts had to use the toilet on their escape craft. Another shuttle, however, left Earth Saturday to bring a replacement toilet to the International Space Station. The Phoenix rover has also landed on Mars and will soon be ready to take pictures and samples. It must first unfold its robotic arm, which is happening over a period of two days, to work out any problems in the system. On the news, I heard about the history of travel to Mars, starting in the 1960s when scientists began to aim for it. They finally landed in 1976, but on later missions, in 1999, they failed. However, in 2004, Spirit and Opportunity, both Mars rovers, were successful and took pictures and collected samples. In Nepal, a major governmental change has occurred, changing the government type fro monarchy to republic. A council voted to create a republic, and the king has been instructed to vacate the royal palace. In America, a 200-year-old board game has been found. It features famous baseball players, and is incredibly advanced and entertaining for its time. Only ten of its kind exist, and it is on display in a mansion in Missouri. Obesity rates in America are also supposedly beginning to drop, after a twenty-five year increase. Due to healthier eating habits and more exercise, children and teens are becoming thinner, though this trend may not continue. Through CNN student news, I managed to gain information on global events.

There are many things in which I learned from watching CNN Student News such as, the toilet problems at the NASA space station. This blog matches the video on May 30th, 2008.

The toilet at the NASA space station’s toilet was not working by not disposing waste properly. The toilet could dispose of the solid waste just fine, but there were problems with the disposing of liquids. The Astronauts thought of an unconventional way of fixing the toilet, but NASA was not going to take any chances.

A person who had the experience of the toilet not working was Leori Cho. This happened three years ago where he had to deal with the same problem. He says that being able to come home and use a working toilet was a relief :) .

The shuttle discovery that was supposed to take place on Saturday got rid of items that were originally going to be carried by the shuttle in order to bring a new toilet pump to the station. Spare parts were shipped from Russia in time for the launch. If all else fails astronauts will have to use the toilet on the Soias Capsule, their escape pod.

As one can see, there are many facts in which I learned from CNN Student News.

There are many interesting facts in which I learned from the CNN Student News. This blog, “Mars Phoenix Lander”, is from May 30th, 2008.

The robotic machine is getting ready to claw and dig into the soil of the planet Mars. This robot has four joints, the shoulder, arm, elbow, and the wrist. It takes two days to work out the kinks and to get ready for action.

People NASA’s Mission to Mars have always said to keep trying. Fifty-Five percent of missions to Mars have ended in failure. NASA started their missions to Mars in 1960s, but did not land until 1976 by the Viking one and two landings. The Mars Pathfinder landing was in 1997, spending four months capturing and sending pictures to Earth. The next missions were in 1999, the Climate Orbiter and the Polar Lander, who both failed by being lost on their arrival. Also, in 2004, the Rovers Spirit and Opportunity reached Mars, snapped pictures, collected soil samples, and studied rocks. They continued this mission fifteen times longer than expected. The last mission is happening now in 2008, the Phoenix Landing, a ninety day mission underway.

As one can see, there were many important facts I learned about the many Missions to Mars.

From watching CNN Student News, I have learned a tremendous amount of information. Again, I was a little disappointed that they didn’t show the teen power section.

The first thing that they talked about was Michigan and Florida getting their delegates taken away. The delegates were taken away from the two states because the population voted too early. People are protesting saying that they want their votes to count in the presidential election. Barack Obama wasn’t even on the ballots for Michigan. Now each delegate only gets half their vote counted right now.

On the “Is this legit” section of the show, the question was, “Is Puerto Rico a United States state? The answer to the question is no, it is a territory meaning they can’t vote for president.

For the presidential race, John McCain is the Republican representitive. Barack Obama is winning in delegates over Hilary Clinton at the moment, but the actual candidate will be announced in August.

Shout Out: What do King Kong, The Fast and the Furious, and Friday Night Lights have in common? Well the answer is, they were all distributed by Universal Pictures.

In Universal City, California, Universal Pictures’ studio caught on fire. The blaze is under control by firefighters at the moment now though.

A space ship just launched that held parts of a Japanese science lab and a robotic arm.

The prince of Wales, Prince William, just joined the navy so that he will become familiar with weapons before he becomes king. He will be in the Caribbean during the height of hurricanes. One of his main jobs is to stop drug smugglers coming and going on sea. He will be treated just like a regular person would be treated while on the ship. For example, he will have the same night shifts, eat the same food, and sleep in the same bunks that everyone else onboard the ship are.

There is a Nathan’s Hotdogs eating contest on Saturday that took place in Overland Park, Kansas. The contest is to see who will qualify for nationals in Coney Island.

I learned many new things by watching CNN student news. First, I learned that voters in Puerto Rico are taking to the polls as the primary season starts to wind down. I also learned that the residents of Puerto Rico can not vote in the general U.S. presidential election because it is not a state but a territory owned by the U.S. Second, I learned that a fire broke out in a Universal Studios lot and destroyed many sets, a King Kong exhibit, and threatened the MTV music awards. Third, I learned that a rocket was launched into space, carrying parts to repair the space stations only toilet. Finally, I learned that Prince William has prepared for a Navy Deployment and will be trained for two months on a war ship called the Iron Duke in the Caribbean. Overall this report was very informative about news and events that are happening right now.

Mr. Imrie!! I gave a comment on May 29th but you never graded it.
I was wondering if you ever got it? Because.. its still “waiting moderation.”

The stars * mean I didn’t how to spell it.

Ok, so I watched a video on June 2nd about the presidential compaign and not letting Michigan and Florida vote, Puerto Rico not being able to vote, the fire at Univeral City, the Space Shuttle that rocketed off in Florida, Prince William’s Navy Duty, and the Hot Dog eating Contest.

The first clip I watched about was the presidential compaign trail. Puerto Rico voters went to the polls to vote. So, back in January, Michigan and Florida held presidential primaries, but the democratic party didn’t approve so they punished the state by taking away their delegates*. Many people in Florida and Michigan protested to have the right to vote; and to count their votes like any other countries. Senator Bill Nelson fought for the right for Florida. Senator Carl Levin fought for the right for Michigan.

The next clip I watched about was about how Puerto Rico is not a state and cannot vote in the general U.S state. But, they can vote presidential primaries. They then talked about the people running for president. McCain*, Clinton, and Obama. They also talked about the issues in America. Such as, gas prices, economy, immigration, War in Iraq, Gun control, health care, and taxes.

In Universal City, in California, there was a fire. Fire fighters got the fire under control but it damaged many things. It destroyed several sets and a King Kong exhibit. It also threatened a MTV movie awards; the show was scheduled to take place in the univeral lot.

In the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a space shuttle rocketed off. The space shuttel is carrying parts of a Japanese science laboratory and a pair of robotic arms.

Next, was about Prince William’s Navy Duty. He just wrapped up a tour with the royal navy. He might spend his time in a navy uniform and on a warship on the carribean*.

In Overland Park, Kansas, there was a hot dog eating contest. A lot of people did it, if they ate enough in a matter of time, they will be qualified for the main event.

I have learned so many things watching this from the CNN student news. I was well- informed about what was going on in the world.

  49. 49 Tara A. June 2, 2008 at 3:44 pm

On CNN Student News today there were many topics that influence the way we as a nation live today. Some of the topics were politics, universal studios, Prince William’s duty, and Nathan’s famous hotdog eating contest.

The world of politics is very hectic and confusing sometimes and the candidates probably agree. The DNC decided not to count some inputted votes. The state representatives tried to change that. They did everything they could to get the committee to count votes from the states of Florida and Michigan.

Also in the world of politics is who has the right to vote and who doesn’t. Puerto Rico can’t vote necessarily but they can vote for state primaries.

Another topic in politics is who is leading in each party. In the Republican Party McKain is ahead. In the Democratic Party Obamma and Clinton are ahead. These three are neck and neck for the one to be president.

Universal studios have made many horror, tragedy, action, and comedy movies. What they didn’t expect was to have an own horror in their park. There was a fire that happened at the park a few nights ago. They got the blaze down to a minimum but it still happened to destroy a main tour exhibit, King Kong. Also MTV movie awards were planned to be filmed there that night so their plans were destroyed too.

Prince William has decided to help this country out by enrolling in the U.S. Navy. He is going to visit the iron duke. He will go through junior officer training in the upcoming months. It will teach him parts of a submarine and helicopter. Prince William, though, has high worries set in front of him. He will be sailing during high hurricane season. William is a prince but won’t be treated like it at the navy. He will be treated like any other person. He will have to carry on all responsibilities like: dishes and sleeping arrangements. Prince William will not be getting any special attention.

Another topic happening in our world is a famous hotdog-eating contest. Nathan’s hotdog-eating contest is being held in Kansas this year. The winner of the smaller round was Eric. He ate the most hotdogs, twent-four, and is qualified for the main event.

The first topic talked about on CNN Student News was on politics. In the political world right now democrats and republicans are arguing about whether the Florida and Michigan votes should be counted. The reason why they wouldn’t be counted is because they voted before it is allowed. Votes are supposed to be cast after the first Tuesday in February. Michigan however, voted on January 15 and Florida voted on January 26. At this point their votes are not being counted and both states got all of their delicates taken away. Barrack Obama was not even on the ballot in Michigan. Supposedly, Clinton won both states with more than 50% of the votes.
The second topic they talked about is still related to politics and the primary election but it’s not technicality in the United States. It’s in Puerto Rico, which is not counted as a US state. It’s a territory of the US. This means that residents there can not vote for the presidential election but they can vote for the primary election. In the end, Clinton won the majority of votes in Puerto Rico.
The third issue was about the fire that started blazing a couple of days ago in Universal Studios. The fire started in the back lot in Universal City. Firefighters got the fire under control but not before it destroyed several sets and a King Kong exhibit. The fire even threatened the MTV Movie Awards last night because they were supposed to be in Universal City.
The fourth subject that was addressed was in the Kennedy Space Center. The space shuttle, Discovery went to the international Space Station to deliver parts from a Japanese science laboratory, a pair of robotic arms, and parts to fix the only toilet in the station that wasn’t working.
The fifth theme they discussed was about Prince William joining the Air Force. They have now said that he is joining the Royal Navy in England. It was also stated that he will probably be going on a warship to the Caribbean’s. The ship is called the Iron Duke. William can only join the ship if he passes a safety course in June. It was said that he will be in no dancer except for the fact that he is going in the middle of hurricane season. He will be training with helicopters, ships, submarines and tower operations. The official for the Royal Navy said that it’s good for Prince William to get to know his forces before becoming king. The official also said that Prince William will get no special attention. He will eat the same food, sleep in the same bunks, and share the same night shifts.
The sixth and finale thing they talked about is the annual Nathans Hot Dog eating Contest. The qualifying was held in Overland Park, Kansas. The main event is in Connie Island on the Fourth of July. The winner that is going to the final event ate 24 hot dogs with the bun.

In CNN student news I learned many interesting things. First I learned that hurricanes have a big impact on gas prices. In 1985 two hurricanes, Katrina and Rita hit the major hub which supplies 20% or 1/5 of all oil in the United States. Those hurricanes sent that oil supply off line which in turn led us to look elsewhere for a supply. This drove up the price of gas since it is produced from oil. During the hurricane 50% of the people were not prepared.I also learned about quake lakes and how they are happing in many place hurting the population. This is what I learned.

  52. 52 Megan M. June 2, 2008 at 8:25 pm

The CNN student news was very interesting to watch. Overall, there were three main topics that were talked about. The first topic was the unfortunate rise in gas prices. Next, was the country’s economy and the affect of gas prices after a natural disaster, such as a hurricane. Finally, experts talked on the affect of an earthquake in China that caused a “quake lake”.

During the discussion on the first topic, many people expressed their feelings to the absurdity of the gas prices. Because many people cannot afford to pay such high amounts, some high school students have come up with creative ways to get to school. For example, one girl said that her truck was a “gas guzzler” and she was tired of having to go to the gas station over and over. So, as a result, she decided to start riding her horse to school. Soon, many others followed her example.

Second, many experts discussed the effect of Hurricane Katrina and the damage that it had done. Many believe that if another hurricane were to damage another place, the economy will struggle greatly. For example, some experts believe that gas prices might rise even higher, making it extremely difficult to travel to different places in a vehicle.

Finally, a team from CNN was shown hiking up a mountain to get to China’s newly formed “quake lake”. As they filmed the lake, the crew noticed bulldozers making a man-made river to drain the water. The lake was formed during a quake in which the mountains moved slightly, allowing water to flow in, and then closing and trapping the water inside. Through the quake lake” and the other topics, I was able to learn more about the news and current events in the country and world.

  53. 53 Hanna M. June 2, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Today’s video on CNN student News is about how hurricanes cannot only destroy living areas, but also gas prices. Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita both have caused gas prices to rise because of the repairs needed on cities that were affected by Katrina and Rita. The second part of this video is all about how teenagers are getting craftsy and looking at new ways to get to their desired destinations. Instead of driving a car, some have even been taking horses as a ride to the places that they want to go. The third part of the video is about how China has been trying to find ways to stop the Olympics in Beijing. Many have died from an earthquake and their bodies might cause diseases to go through China. News reporters have been trying to find a way to see quake lakes in China. A group of them found a way to get up one mountain. They had no other choice than to walk. They all made it six hours after starting the climb.

  54. 54 Drake B. June 3, 2008 at 5:46 am

Because of the exposed coast line in Louisiana, a hurricane could wipeout most or all of the oil mines there causing gas to shoot up five to ten percent. If this happens then most of America could be affected and not only those who own a car. Kids would start to walk to school to save their parents money on gas. It’s also horrible that this could ever happen because if it did, the economy would go up with the hurricane.
To stop this from happening, many people had great ideas. Thee girls decided to ride horses to school so they didn’t pay for gas at all. Many others are starting to buy smaller hybrids, to save gas. Many others are walking or riding a bike which is also a great idea.
Unfortunately, there was a disaster killing many with many still missing. A crew wanted to see a quake lake formed by sink holes and dammed rivers. Many local work crews are trying to move debris out to bleed these lakes and save the citizens below. On the way down they also found one of the most haunting scenes ever. There was a giant land slide and nearly covered the buildings below. Locals say that thousands were still buried under the rock and dirt.
Back home people were having a fun little concert on who could be the next Elvis, not that anybody could replace him. People tried to dress like him and sing like him, but try it the key word there. It was truly hilarious and was a fun way to end a sad story.

  55. 55 Kaylyn B. June 3, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I can not believe that a hurricane could damage Port Fourchon and make the gas prices increase by 10 celebraties are even complaining. I also can’t believe that crude oil is 25 percent of the cost of the gas that’s amazing.
There is a quake lake in China from the devistating earthquake that happened last month and it is inbetween two mountains and looks like it had distroyed a small town under it. The earthquake also destroyed many mountains and some of them fell into the quake lake and made a dangerous cliff making it difficult to get down there. the earthquake completely destroyed all of Beshwan County and if there was a building still standing it was just standing up. The district has not even cleaned any of it up.I can’t believe thatthe earthquake destroyed so many structures and took so many lives. I’m starting to think about what would happen if that happened hear, but it wouldn’t and I hope it wil never happen again. So many kids our age died in the earthquake, it’s devistating to think that that actually happened. but it did and all we can do now is help with the red cross fundraiser.
Back in the U.S. Kennedy is getting out of the hospital from a tumor removal from his brain. That’s all the important news that I heard from CNN student news. See Ya!

  56. 56 Sophie S. June 3, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Todays CNN student news was mostly about hurricanes and predictions for the whole hurricane season. A small hurricane hit land called hurricane arthur. They said that if a larger, more damaging hurricane hits the bottome states (such as Alabama and Mississippi) it would not only affect that part of the country, but the WHOLE country as well. The port that was hit by hurricane Katrina and Rita is protected but these upcoming hurricanes could harm our economy badly
Also, they were talking about how outrageous gas prices are now. Some high school students boycotted these prices by riding horses around. I think that this sohws that right now, our economy is decreasing instead of moving forward. By this I mean that instead of moving forwaard and improving, our economy is moving backwars in a way- people, as a reaction to inflamation, are boycotting. As there was a Great Depression, we might be moving towards a Great Recession.
Also, people are worrying about Quake Lakes and evacuating thousands of people. Quake Lakes are when lakes swell and flood.
